Here's a very basic one I have made for KS3 Spanish on shops and quantities. Now that I've got the basic concept, I'm off to make some with my sentence builders </p>

Here are three activities which my classes are loving:</span></p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span style="font-family: Century Gothic;">4 Squared An oldy but goodie which I had never used before this term. Draw 4 squares on the board then ask a question. Whoever gets it right gets his/ her name on the board: once you have 4 names, the next pupil to answer correctly chooses someone to eliminate from one of the squares. I give stickers to the 4 in the box when the game ends. </span></li><li><span style="font-family: Century Gothic;">Stand up if You say or display a phrase in MT or TL and they stand up if they think they know it. You choose one of the pupils standing and if they get it right, everyone standing up gets a point. If they get it wrong, everyone standing loses a point. I gave a sticker for reaching 4 points and a sticker for every point after that (5 stickers = a positive on lesson monitor) It works brilliantly at all levels.Yes, some might not stand up at all but they still seemed to enjoy it</span></li><li><span style="font-family: Century Gothic;">Vindictive You can do this orally or with a mini whiteboard each. All pupils stand up to play. Call out a word, the first person to call out their name and answer immediately when called upon or to write the correct trans choses someone else to sit down. If they are sitting down, they still play and if they win the round, they stand back up & knock two others out. The winner is the “last man standing” <span style="caret-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); text-size-adjust: auto;">If two pupils are left at the end but someone sitting down gets the correct answer first, they stand back up and knock the two standing out and ultimately are the champion. This year I have moved to using OneNote as my teacher planner, after inspiration from some other teachers in the Facebook <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/niteacherscollaborate/" target="_blank">NI Teachers Collaborate</a> group. Rather than use one notebook as my planner, I am using the Teacher section in the class notebook for each of my classes in MS Teams.
Here's some screenshots from my Year 9 notebook. This is a page from the Content Library which the pupils can look at but not edit. I put useful links, videos and texts here.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9VbR3ukhdpk/X5sb5YSvFGI/AAAAAAAAHTc/ziNsZtN4pIAy-b9SuDKvAa6eUM06MqyfQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1167/Year%2B9%2BContent%2BLibrary%2BOneNote.png" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" width="600" data-original-height="576" data-original-width="1167" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9VbR3ukhdpk/X5sb5YSvFGI/AAAAAAAAHTc/ziNsZtN4pIAy-b9SuDKvAa6eUM06MqyfQCLcBGAsYHQ/s600/Year%2B9%2BContent%2BLibrary%2BOneNote.png"/></a></div>
This is what I use as my planner. I adapted a PPT template from the aforementioned Facebook group then exported the slide as a JPEG. I import it to the page I have labelled as week beginning and rightclicking on the JPEG, I can set it as the page background which then allows me to type and write over it.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GukPIk68c9k/X5sb5cX4K1I/AAAAAAAAHTY/ztLlVBC6dQgFKi6TaTfkdBp2sK4jOMOdwCLcBGAsYHQ/s805/Year%2B9%2BTeacher%2Bplanner%2BOneNote.png" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" width="600" data-original-height="588" data-original-width="805" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GukPIk68c9k/X5sb5cX4K1I/AAAAAAAAHTY/ztLlVBC6dQgFKi6TaTfkdBp2sK4jOMOdwCLcBGAsYHQ/s600/Year%2B9%2BTeacher%2Bplanner%2BOneNote.png"/></a></div>
I have created a section in the Teacher Only section called Unit Content. I then can create pages within this, with hyperlinks to the documents and PPTs I intend to use which I have saved in One Drive.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KIE6CKpQ77Y/X5sb5T_MGdI/AAAAAAAAHTU/WMoXWL_0wTwwfPt1kMa01nZTDJm54Bn-wCLcBGAsYHQ/s1133/Year%2B9%2BTeacher%2Bsection%2BOneNote.png" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" width="600" data-original-height="588" data-original-width="1133" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KIE6CKpQ77Y/X5sb5T_MGdI/AAAAAAAAHTU/WMoXWL_0wTwwfPt1kMa01nZTDJm54Bn-wCLcBGAsYHQ/s600/Year%2B9%2BTeacher%2Bsection%2BOneNote.png"/></a></div>
Here are some screenshots from my A level notebook. Again, the Content Library is a superb form of digital textbook for the pupils. Here is an index list of the sections I have included so far, and an example of the page with useful websites.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-r6ZpeJtAYII/X5sdytGZo1I/AAAAAAAAHUA/GD_vgsbZgBwAv22xxfoogGd-diPNhBWDgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1388/A%2Blevel%2Bwebsites%2BOneNote.png" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" width="600" data-original-height="791" data-original-width="1388" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-r6ZpeJtAYII/X5sdytGZo1I/AAAAAAAAHUA/GD_vgsbZgBwAv22xxfoogGd-diPNhBWDgCLcBGAsYHQ/s600/A%2Blevel%2Bwebsites%2BOneNote.png"/></a></div>
I can include texts with exercises
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-t_MKWGKVFKM/X5sdthzwlLI/AAAAAAAAHTs/1hdYK75Egz8ndGG_gHph8wmvPZP128rhgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1393/A%2Blevel%2BContent%2BLibrary%2Btopics%2BOneNote.png" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" width="600" data-original-height="808" data-original-width="1393" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-t_MKWGKVFKM/X5sdthzwlLI/AAAAAAAAHTs/1hdYK75Egz8ndGG_gHph8wmvPZP128rhgCLcBGAsYHQ/s600/A%2Blevel%2BContent%2BLibrary%2Btopics%2BOneNote.png"/></a></div>
I can easily paste the link to an assignment in Teams or just post it to one of the channels.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AIOHHKMMAmo/X5sdytAn0HI/AAAAAAAAHUE/h5UcscfvBZU_jZwrmYfDQsJukxds1UDXwCLcBGAsYHQ/s651/Copy%2Blink%2Bto%2Bpage%2BOneNote.png" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" width="600" data-original-height="625" data-original-width="651" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AIOHHKMMAmo/X5sdytAn0HI/AAAAAAAAHUE/h5UcscfvBZU_jZwrmYfDQsJukxds1UDXwCLcBGAsYHQ/s600/Copy%2Blink%2Bto%2Bpage%2BOneNote.png"/></a></div>
Another section in the Content Library for A level is the film we study at AS. You can see the pages I have added already in Column 2.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-49AKtwm0amk/X5se2CvKx4I/AAAAAAAAHUg/UzvdTRCQSogQP6dsOPQcYSAaQzRUrcvfwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1406/A%2Blevel%2BEl%2BBola%2BOneNote.png" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" width="600" data-original-height="805" data-original-width="1406" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-49AKtwm0amk/X5se2CvKx4I/AAAAAAAAHUg/UzvdTRCQSogQP6dsOPQcYSAaQzRUrcvfwCLcBGAsYHQ/s600/A%2Blevel%2BEl%2BBola%2BOneNote.png"/></a></div>
Here is the oral section in the Content Library, again the second column shows the different pages I have added to help the pupils work independently.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CVmko4PRiD0/X5se2HeyyNI/AAAAAAAAHUo/SViJvSNBdlg600l3ySefgFDCXtqVFLIyACLcBGAsYHQ/s1388/A%2Blevel%2Boral%2BOneNote.png" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" width="600" data-original-height="808" data-original-width="1388" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CVmko4PRiD0/X5se2HeyyNI/AAAAAAAAHUo/SViJvSNBdlg600l3ySefgFDCXtqVFLIyACLcBGAsYHQ/s600/A%2Blevel%2Boral%2BOneNote.png"/></a></div>
Finally, here is my Teacher Only section with the planner, SEN, Admin and Topics section, which I use in the same way as the Year 9 one detailed above. The Planner section has a planner page per week as well as the schemes of work and scheme of assessment for quick reference.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-00N_mh8qlu8/X5se2H9Vq0I/AAAAAAAAHUk/_AokQnTRcKMmqJxoVAXiLVPqBEiJtNQiQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1400/A%2Blevel%2Bplanner%2BOneNote.png" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" width="600" data-original-height="807" data-original-width="1400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-00N_mh8qlu8/X5se2H9Vq0I/AAAAAAAAHUk/_AokQnTRcKMmqJxoVAXiLVPqBEiJtNQiQCLcBGAsYHQ/s600/A%2Blevel%2Bplanner%2BOneNote.png"/></a></div>
I genuinely cannot recommend using OneNote as a planner enough. It has made teaching so much easier, particularly this year as we hotdesk from classroom to classroom. Let me know if you decide to try it
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-786079347104048326.post-4993341010783307872020-10-27T12:31:00.008-07:002020-10-27T13:39:45.369-07:00Retrieval roulette for GCSE Spanish I read Adam Boxer's blogpost about Retrieval Roulette <a href="https://achemicalorthodoxy.wordpress.com/2018/08/18/retrieval-roulettes/" target="_blank"></a> with great interest and downloaded his template. A quick appeal on our NI languages Facebook group and a lovely friend had emailed the CCEA GCSE Spanish vocabulary list through in Excel. It didn't take long to copy it across and then categorise each topic.
There are notes in the second tab to explain how to set your parameters according to the vocab you want to revise in the list. Therefore you can tailor the quizzes each time you use it.
I'm looking forward to using this in class to help with retrieval practice and also for the pupils to use themselves at home.

This year I have started to use the integrated class notebook more with my classes. It makes it much easier to mark using digital inking <a href="http://amandasalt.blogspot.com/2020/10/digital-inking-in-class-notebook.html" target="_blank"></a> and means the pupils have their work assembled in one place online.
There are, I am sure, many different ways to approach this but here's what I do if I have a particular page I want all pupils to complete as part of an assignment:
1)Add a page to your Teacher only section or to the Content Library in the class notebook. The Teacher Only section is private from the pupils whereas the Content Library is a read-only section for them. I think of this as a digital textbook.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VgRQT0weKCg/X5bz6IC20II/AAAAAAAAHSA/Qnnawr2vheck8nlzYuoBnAO3yIpaJBCcACLcBGAsYHQ/s1059/Screenshot%2B2020-10-26%2Bat%2B15.45.56.png" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" width="400" data-original-height="669" data-original-width="1059" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VgRQT0weKCg/X5bz6IC20II/AAAAAAAAHSA/Qnnawr2vheck8nlzYuoBnAO3yIpaJBCcACLcBGAsYHQ/s400/Screenshot%2B2020-10-26%2Bat%2B15.45.56.png"/></a></div>
2) Go to the MS Team for that class and click on the Assignments tab then click on Create (bottom left) or the + sign (top right) depending on the device you are using. Then select 'Add resources'

It's as easy as that. When the pupils have submitted the work, you go in through the assignment and click through each pupil's name, clicking on the MS OneNote link each time.

The two options at that stage are either to go in through the assignment in Teams or to open the page in OneNote.
You can enlarge the photo, crop it, etc.. I went to the Draw tab and selected either text mode or the pen to annotate their work and add comments. I then went back to the Assignments on Teams and added general feedback plus their overall score before returning their work.

I asked them if they wanted to join us via MeetNow on Teams and they agreed to.
We had a few hitches. The Meet button is on the browser but I couldn't see it on the Teams app on my iPad or my phone. A quick query in the always useful c2k Getting to know Teams post primary group and the brilliant Donna Vaughan from c2k pointed me in the right direction as you need to go to your calendar within Teams and start a new event. This allows you to give it a title and put it in the right channel.

The two pupils joined using the link on Teams and I then told them to turn off their cameras and their mics, unless they wanted to say or ask something, and we proceeded with the lesson. It was useful as this is a hard topic to catch up on if you miss it. The downside was that they couldn't hear their peers as easily as me, given that I was beside the iPad and they were socially distanced from me in the classroom.
However, all in all, it was a worthwhile first go and definitely worth it from a learning perspective.

But we in the languages department have really only tapped into its huge potential in the last year or two. We have all the vocab for each year group loaded so that pupils can learn the vocabulary in a fun and competitive way. It's also an excellent way of promoting independent learning at home. <div>https://quizlet.com/spanishingrosvenor</div><div>However, it's only in the last few months that excitement has reached unseen levels with the introduction of Quizlet Live. NB You need access to a class set of PCs or tablets / phones. As a teacher, you go to quizlet.com and select the set of vocabulary you want to drill / test. You select the Live option and then create the game in the new browser window with a mere click of a button. Share the code with the pupils who have gone directly to Quizlet.live, they enter their names and you start the game. You can randomly assign teams or select them. The website cleverly picks up on the language so the team names will be in Spanish, etc. </div><div>The pupils work in their teams to answer the questions / translate the language. Each pupil has 3 or 4 possibilities but only one will have the correct option. If they get it wrong, the team loses all their points and has to start again. The first team to gain 12 points wins. All my classes love Quizlet Live and clamour to play it every lesson, no matter what age they are. As a teacher, apart from the massive engagement factor, the benefits are that they are drilling the vocabulary if they get it wrong and at the end, it shows you what pupils were consistently getting wrong so this informs your planning for the next lesson. </div><div>I cannot recommend Quizlet enough, I really look back a year or two and wonder what I did pre-Quizlet! </div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-786079347104048326.post-6244725569378972302016-06-14T23:32:00.002-07:002016-06-14T23:32:27.787-07:00NICILT #DLL2016Today I have the honour of presenting at NICILT's Digital Language Learning day at Queen's. A little bit of differentiation <a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-F4peCH5agTc/Vv7eTeNEieI/AAAAAAAADtM/g30EWr-iNJsh5_guSzPyST0Edup2WcQhA/s1600/everybody-is-a-genius.gif" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="247" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-F4peCH5agTc/Vv7eTeNEieI/AAAAAAAADtM/g30EWr-iNJsh5_guSzPyST0Edup2WcQhA/s320/everybody-is-a-genius.gif" width="320" /></a><br />
This year as a staff we are looking at differentiation, what we currently do and sharing good practice on staff days and in departmental meetings. I personally would say that I struggle with the challenges of differentiation in the traditional terms of multiple worksheets to choose from, etc. However I am enjoying the different ideas we are coming up with and seeing how pupils respond to them.<br />
<br />
A fairly recent arrival to the Spanish Department is our Challenge Grid. I first spotted a tweet by Jake Hunton <a href="https://twitter.com/jakehuntonMFL" target="_blank">https://twitter.com/jakehuntonMFL</a> and Jake kindly emailed me his template to use and adapt. The basic premise is that pupils should see how many points they can accumulate in 15 mins. This is one for our Form 1 pupils on the topic of physical description (obviously when it is displayed as a powerpoint, there won't be underlining)<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xrLOfNI-1NU/Vv7KePRk1aI/AAAAAAAADsI/Jr9pXOCW504Dz9ZJxt83HG3adcbcHC9rQ/s1600/Screenshot%2B2016-04-01%2B19.22.09.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="384" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xrLOfNI-1NU/Vv7KePRk1aI/AAAAAAAADsI/Jr9pXOCW504Dz9ZJxt83HG3adcbcHC9rQ/s640/Screenshot%2B2016-04-01%2B19.22.09.png" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
Another option is to give them a worksheet with sentences with different points values and tell them they need to score a certain number of points, as demonstrated here by my colleague's worksheet.<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FarhtBBp234/Vv7OVYqvkyI/AAAAAAAADsU/7EOC-V1iTSokD0udUhFUvuPoA_T74Ip-Q/s1600/Screenshot%2B2016-04-01%2B19.40.43.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FarhtBBp234/Vv7OVYqvkyI/AAAAAAAADsU/7EOC-V1iTSokD0udUhFUvuPoA_T74Ip-Q/s640/Screenshot%2B2016-04-01%2B19.40.43.png" width="464" /></a><br />
<br />
A third idea we are trialling around choices is an Extension PPT. My colleague has made this first one and I have then made another for the Form 3 topic of clothes.<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-skFo1saXfcA/Vv7OwAIHRAI/AAAAAAAADsc/m81kC8XNh34hJ9yQAGxy9qV9i1pOmB9_w/s1600/Screenshot%2B2016-04-01%2B19.39.26.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-skFo1saXfcA/Vv7OwAIHRAI/AAAAAAAADsc/m81kC8XNh34hJ9yQAGxy9qV9i1pOmB9_w/s640/Screenshot%2B2016-04-01%2B19.39.26.png" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Another staff focus this year is marking for improvement. And surely there is no greater differentiation than tailoring the learning to suit the individual pupil. As part of this, I am looking at feedback inc highlighting the correct work in A level essays rather than showing what's wrong and witholding their score until they have had DIRT time. The pupils have really liked the positive highlighted marking and they are now learning to apply the mark scheme better as they look at what they have done well and write their own www and ebi<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-liICI9KPLsI/Vv7UVQCmR4I/AAAAAAAADsw/zDIoybgJg6M6choGDX1s4yzTRLA_rlX9Q/s1600/DIRT%2BA%2Blevel%2Bessays%2B.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-liICI9KPLsI/Vv7UVQCmR4I/AAAAAAAADsw/zDIoybgJg6M6choGDX1s4yzTRLA_rlX9Q/s640/DIRT%2BA%2Blevel%2Bessays%2B.png" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I am building DIRT time into lessons at all levels, including using our purple pens for self-reflection. It is enlightening and rewarding, for the pupils and for me.<br />
<br />
Another marking and feedback idea I am excited to try out is LIFT, one of many ideas I have magpied from the great Gianfranco Conti <a href="https://gianfrancoconti.wordpress.com/2016/02/21/six-things-i-tried-out-this-year-which-really-enhanced-my-teaching/" target="_blank">https://gianfrancoconti.wordpress.com/2016/02/21/six-things-i-tried-out-this-year-which-really-enhanced-my-teaching/</a><br />
"<span style="background-color: white; color: #444444; font-family: 'Gentium Basic', Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; line-height: 28px; text-align: justify;">LIFT, or Learner Initiated Feedback Technique .... consists of questions about linguistic items they are using in their written pieces that they annotate in the margin of the page they are writing on. For example, if they are not sure whether a clause requires the subjunctive or conditional mood, they will underline or circle the verb and write on margin: “Is this verb supposed to be in the subjunctive? Why/Why not? </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #444444; font-family: 'Gentium Basic', Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; line-height: 28px; text-align: justify;">This year, I have used it more consistently, extensively and, more importantly I have insisted on higher quality questions. It has made me enjoy giving feedback more and my students have reported benefitting from it"</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #444444; font-family: 'Gentium Basic', Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; line-height: 28px; text-align: justify;">Further reading I've really enjoyed on marking and differentiation can be found at <a href="https://gianfrancoconti.wordpress.com/2015/05/12/five-things-you-should-do-when-you-correct-your-students-essays/" target="_blank">https://gianfrancoconti.wordpress.com/2015/05/12/five-things-you-should-do-when-you-correct-your-students-essays/</a> as well as <a href="http://justtryingtobebetter.net/marking-is-feedback-is-differentiation-is-planning/" target="_blank">http://justtryingtobebetter.net/marking-is-feedback-is-differentiation-is-planning/</a></span><br />
<br />
As well as these newer ideas, there are strategies that I have been using for months or years that are also individualising the learning and hopefully therefore differentiating. By creating iBooks at A level and some at GCSE, I am allowing pupils to work at own speed and choose their activities. The drawback from the pupil perspective is that some pupils may not be good at timing and pacing themselves and I have found that some don't cope so well and need more of a guiding hand to stay on task. The same has happened with setting their own HWs at A level. It has been excellent for many pupils but I need a better system for checking what pupils have done and some don't want to choose their own homeworks or don't do it and try to get away with it. At the moment they have a choice of a Learning Log or a simple tick grid.<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nbxKb89JaMI/Vv7Z4ZT4TUI/AAAAAAAADtA/OnVqZETUd-kDSFJWlm_OzB4QLGdl65-ZA/s1600/Screenshot%2B2016-04-01%2B21.27.06.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nbxKb89JaMI/Vv7Z4ZT4TUI/AAAAAAAADtA/OnVqZETUd-kDSFJWlm_OzB4QLGdl65-ZA/s640/Screenshot%2B2016-04-01%2B21.27.06.png" width="478" /></a><br />
<br />
We also have Challenge Corner with Challenge Cards, Jenga with accompanying Spanish sheets, Spanish novels, translations of books like Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Harry Potter, magazines and comic books. This year I've also brought in the idea of Cushion Corner, so that pupils who finish first aren't 'penalised' by being given another worksheet but can choose what they would like to do from any of the above to extend their learning.<br />
<br />
An idea that is bandied about a lot now on Twitter is Takeaway Homework or giving pupils a choice when it comes to CATs and that's something that we would like to look at as a department. For me the difficulty is balancing the choice for the pupils (which I love) with the need for CAT scores for report cards, so we'll need to look at that.<br />
